Estoi is located to the north of Faro. It has a fine rocco palace which was built in the 19th century for the Conde de Carvalhal. At the time of writing the palace is closed, due to restoration work, and it is planned that it should open as a luxury hotel. It is due to open July 2008 but was not open when we visited in August 2008. By the look of things it will not be finished for some time, perhaps August 2009.
There are also the ruins of a Roman villa in nearby Milreu. It also features a temple, possibly to a water or sea god.
Go to Estoi on a dull day, as it is quite far inland and can be unbearably hot otherwise, particularly when visiting the Roman villa.
