Tavira is located to the east of Faro. Tavira is one of the most attractive towns in the Algarve and maintains many old buildings. It was founded some 2,000 years ago and in the time of the Moors was an important fishing village. Much of Tavira was destroyed in the earthquake of 1755. There are some 37 churches and a Roman bridge links the two halves of the town across the River Gilao. The populaton is around 20,000.

There are boat taxis to the islands just off the coast, where you can enjoy very beautiful, quiet and secluded beaches with warm waters. There are two golf courses nearby, Benamor and Colina Verde.
